Ahmedabad to Host 2029 Weightlifting World Championships, a Historic First for India

Ahmedabad, Gujarat, has secured the hosting rights for the Senior Weightlifting World Championships in 2029, marking a historic first for India. The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) announced its decision on Sunday, following an Executive Board meeting held in Ningbo, China. This significant award places India on the global stage for senior weightlifting competitions.

During the same meeting, the IWF also awarded other major championships. Russia's capital, Moscow, was confirmed as the host city for the 2030 Senior World Championships. Additionally, the 2028 World Youth Championships will be held in Prishtina, Kosovo, while Caracas, Venezuela, is set to host the IWF World Junior Championships. IWF General Secretary Jose Quiñones expressed confidence in the chosen hosts, stating, "All the bids we received were excellent and we are sure that the Championships in your respective countries will be a huge success."

Quiñones further highlighted the growth of the sport, noting that three of these four countries – Kosovo, Venezuela, and India – will be organizing an IWF world event for the first time. This indicates the sport's expanding global reach and the increasing desirability of hosting such competitions among various nations. The IWF explained its decision to award four world championships concurrently as a move to strengthen and streamline its international calendar in the coming years.

Ahmedabad's selection for the 2029 Weightlifting World Championships adds to its growing portfolio of international sporting events. The city is already scheduled to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games and is India's proposed host venue should the country succeed in its bid to stage the 2036 Olympic Games.
